There are 5 major white wine grapes which are used to make most of the white wines in the world. These white wine grapes are Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Viognier.

Chardonnay: This grape is grown all over the world and is known for having peach flavors. This wine is aged well in oak barrels and can be known for its crisp taste.

Pinot Grigio: This grape is probably most popular in the United States and is grown best in northern Italy. The wines made in northern Italy tend to be light and fresh.

Sauvignon Blanc: Some of the major aromas in this wine are cut-grass and gooseberry. These grapes are grown all over but are best produced from New Zealand. This wine is best to drink without much aging.

Riesling: This wine grape is known for its racy acidity and is one of the best wine grapes around. Wine made with these grapes has the great ability to age for a long time. You may experience floral and lime flavors when drinking wine made from Riesling grapes.

Viognier: These white wine grapes are expanding into California, Australia, and South America rather quickly. These grapes provide tasty flavors of apricot and blossom.

Red Wine Versus White Wine

Lets look at the differences in health benefits and antioxidants of red wine and white wine. While many believe red wine is better for you, the answer still remains unclear.

Here is a break down of the calories and alcohol per average glass of red and white wine.

Red Wine
(5 ounces or about 1 glass)
roughly 120 calories
180 milligrams potassium
15 grams alcohol

White Wine
(5 ounces or about 1 glass)
roughly 120 calories
101 milligrams potassium
14.6 grams alcohol

We also know that red wine contains more flavonoids, nonflavonoids, and antioxidants. Many people believe that these are the main source of health benefits that wine provides.

Beer and wine do contain some antioxidants but not nearly as much as red wine. If the theory of antioxidants being healthy is true, then red wine would be healthier than white wine. White wine would still have some benefits due to its antioxidants, although it is a much smaller amount.

But the results of many studies have been unclear. Some research has shown that antioxidants are healthy for you while other research has shown that it is not.

Aside from antioxidants, wine is good in moderation because it helps reduce bad cholesterol, increase good cholesterol, and prevent blood clots.

Key word there is MODERATION…which means no more than 2 glasses of wine a night for men and no more than 1 glass a night for women.

Wine can also reduce stress and help you relax which could add years on to your life right there.

So what’s the final verdict? Red wine may be better for you if antioxidants are as good as many people believe. If you take antioxidants out of the picture, red wine and white wine would both have the same benefits.

Recent studies have had mixed results when testing the health benefits of white wine. Many studies have shown that red wine has health benefits, but other studies have been inconclusive of the health benefits.

Many researchers don’t see much of a difference between the health benefits in white wine versus red wine, while others do.

While there is still no clear results showing that red wine is better than white wine in terms of health benefits, we know that red wine contains more antioxidants, flavonoids, and nonflavonoids.

Scientists believe that the antioxidants are the main source of health benefits surrounding red wine. Although white wine and beer have some antioxidants, they are nowhere near as many as red wine.

If antioxidants prove to be the leading cause of health benefits, then white wine will provide some health benefits, if you drink it moderately, but will not be as healthy as red wine.

For now, the verdict is still unclear. Over the next few years, we should come closer to figuring out if antioxidants are beneficial or not.
