Lets look at the differences in health benefits and antioxidants of red wine and white wine. While many believe red wine is better for you, the answer still remains unclear.

Here is a break down of the calories and alcohol per average glass of red and white wine.

Red Wine
(5 ounces or about 1 glass)
roughly 120 calories
180 milligrams potassium
15 grams alcohol

White Wine
(5 ounces or about 1 glass)
roughly 120 calories
101 milligrams potassium
14.6 grams alcohol

We also know that red wine contains more flavonoids, nonflavonoids, and antioxidants. Many people believe that these are the main source of health benefits that wine provides.

Beer and wine do contain some antioxidants but not nearly as much as red wine. If the theory of antioxidants being healthy is true, then red wine would be healthier than white wine. White wine would still have some benefits due to its antioxidants, although it is a much smaller amount.

But the results of many studies have been unclear. Some research has shown that antioxidants are healthy for you while other research has shown that it is not.

Aside from antioxidants, wine is good in moderation because it helps reduce bad cholesterol, increase good cholesterol, and prevent blood clots.

Key word there is MODERATION…which means no more than 2 glasses of wine a night for men and no more than 1 glass a night for women.

Wine can also reduce stress and help you relax which could add years on to your life right there.

So what’s the final verdict? Red wine may be better for you if antioxidants are as good as many people believe. If you take antioxidants out of the picture, red wine and white wine would both have the same benefits.

Red wine contains a fairly large amount of calories for a 4 ounce glass. The higher the alcohol content the more calories red wine typically has.

The following is the amount of calories in a typical 4 ounces glass of wine:

Dry Red Wine: 83 Calories

Fortified Wines:

Consuming wine in moderation shouldn’t have an effect on your weight.

Drinking more than 1-2 glasses a day could cause some weight gain due to the excess calories.

Women should stick to no more than 1 glass a night and men should have no more than 2 glasses a night.

Get Rid of Red Wine Stains

Red wine is known for staining clothes, carpet, and other fabrics very quickly and badly. Getting rid of red wine stains will take quick action and some work on your part.

As soon as you spill red wine, grab some paper towels or napkins and start blotting the stains immediately.

Take some laundry soup and some hydrogen peroxide and start putting a little of each on the stain and rub them into the fabric. Make sure you rub it into both sides of the fabric if possible (can’t on carpet).

Rinse off the fabric and add a little more soap and then wash it in the washer in cold water.

If you are getting the stain out of carpet, just keep scrubbing until you get the stain out.

If your clothes are dry-clean only, take them immediately to the dry cleaner. Using soap, water, and peroxide on dry-clean only clothes may actually make the problem worse.
