Most wine makers make the wine so it will be ready to be consumed within a year or so of you purchasing it. Wine is already aged properly and then ages more during transportation to the stores and even more on the stores shelf.

So if you buy a bottle of wine from a store, it doesn’t need any more aging and will most likely not taste better with more aging.

Now that being said, there are more expensive wines which have been properly aged for many years. These wines definitely get better with age.

If you know a lot about wine, you’ll know what wines you can buy and age a little bit longer yourself and which ones you can’t.

If you want a old, aged wine, I suggest you buy one already aged and drink it within a year.

The ideal temperature for aging wine is a cool cellar temperature around 50 – 55 degrees F. During the transportation process and the storage of wine by stores, the wine is often kept at a much high temperature than 55 degrees causing it to age faster.

Since wineries assume the wine will be sold and drank within 3 years, there is no need to age the wine anymore than it already has.

Try to keep wine stored in a cool, dark place at around 55 degrees until you are ready to pop it open.
