Does Wine in a Box Expire?

Box wine does expire. The best way to determine when your box wine expires is to look on the box and see if there is a date of expiration.

For example, on my “Black Box” wine I have, it says that it is fresh for 4 weeks after opening. Although it may be good for 5-6 weeks if you store it in a dark, cool place.

It should stay good for at least a year or two if it is unopened.

Box wine is improving in quality and is becoming a better option for wine drinkers who don’t want to waste any wine.

If you only have one glasses here and there, then box wine may be the best choice for you. Since wine from a bottle goes bad after a day or two, you can end up wasting much of it.

When Does Wine Expire

Can Wine Bottles Burst When Frozen?

Yes! Wine bottles can burst if you put them in the freeze. As air cools it will expand and that expansion has to go somewhere!

So what happens? Well the cork in your wine bottle may be pushed out to make room for the expansion…or the bottle will break.

If you don’t leave the wine bottle in the refriderator for very long then you will be fine, although it isn’t recommended to cool wine by putting it in the freezer.

Red wine is supposed to be just below room temperature anyway so don’t worry about trying to cool it down.

White wine will need to be a bit cooler than room temperature and sticking it in the fridge for 20 minutes should do the trick.

So let’s avoid sticking wine bottles in the freezer…the bottle could burst…the wine will be ruined…and it doesn’t need to be that cold.

Wine expires quickly if opened, although there are ways to prevent it from expiring for a little while. The serious wine drinkers claim that wine expires after a day and a bottle should be finished the same day that it is opened. But for most of us, we don’t want to drink an entire bottle in one night.

Wine starts to go bad or “expires” after it is exposed to oxygen. Some exposure to oxygen is good and that’s why many people will use a decanter for an hour or two before drinking the wine.

Many people buy special corks and wine openers which prevent wine from expiring so quickly by preventing the oxygen from touching the wine. Although some people believe these products don’t really work so well.

If you want to try and preserve the wine after opening, put the cork back in the bottle as soon as possible and store the wine standing straight up.

Before the wine is opened, it should be stored on its side to prevent the cork from drying out. If the cork dries out, oxygen can get into the bottle.

If you don’t drink wine to often, you can always try box wine, although some people hate wine from a box.

Keeping Wine Fresh After Opening

To keep a bottle of wine fresh after you open it, you should immediately keep it cool and put the cork back in. Even between glasses, the wine should be recorked and kept cool. This will slow down the oxidation of the wine and can possibly keep the wine good for a day or two.

If you are looking to preserve open wine for a longer period of time, there are some devices available that may help you.

Scott A. Farmer of California’s Private Preserve developed a mix of gasses (Nitrogen, Carbon Dioxide, and Argon) that you spray into the wine bottle. The gases will help displace the oxygen and protect the wine. Many people have copied his technique and you can find this product many places online.

Vacucin.com has created a vacuum wine save which vacuums out the oxygen in the bottle. Some people say that this sucks out all the aromas of the wine, making the wine not at good.

So I would recommend the gas method of preserving wine over the vacuum method anyday.

Will Wine Freeze

The answer is…Yes. Wine does freeze. Wine is a water based solution and even contains various solutes like ethanol. To freeze alocohol you will have drop the temperature well below the freezing point of water (32 F) typically around 20ish degrees F.

The more alcohol in beer, wine, and liquor, the longer it will take to freeze. So if you have a fruity, less potent wine, like Boone’s Farm, it will freeze at a higher temperature.

On the flip side, if you have a strong wine with a high alcohol content, it will have to get really cold for it to freeze. Some wines may need to go all the way down to 15 degrees F to become almost 100 percent frozen.

Since wine has water in it, the water will freeze at 32 degrees F and you will be left with a slushy wine until it gets cold enough to freeze the alcohol.

Freezing wine is a bad idea because the bottle could burst. Water expands when it freezes forcing the bottle to expand and break. Wine can’t really become 100 percent frozen because the small amounts of ethanol in the wine won’t freeze until they reach -175 degrees F.

So does wine freeze? Yes!

That being said…don’t try to freeze wine.

Does Wine Taste Better with Age

Depending on the wine, it will get better with age, although most wineries make wines which should not be aged any longer.

Most wine makers make the wine so it will be ready to be consumed within a year or so of you purchasing it. Wine is already aged properly and then ages more during transportation to the stores and even more on the stores shelf.

So if you buy a bottle of wine from a store, it doesn’t need any more aging and will most likely not taste better with more aging.

Now that being said, there are more expensive wines which have been properly aged for many years. These wines definitely get better with age.

If you know a lot about wine, you’ll know what wines you can buy and age a little bit longer yourself and which ones you can’t.

If you want a old, aged wine, I suggest you buy one already aged and drink it within a year.

Does Wine Get Better with Age?

The truth is…wine does not always get better with age. Most wineries don’t make wine to last more than a year or two.

The ideal temperature for aging wine is a cool cellar temperature around 50 – 55 degrees F. During the transportation process and the storage of wine by stores, the wine is often kept at a much high temperature than 55 degrees causing it to age faster.

Since wineries assume the wine will be sold and drank within 3 years, there is no need to age the wine anymore than it already has.

Try to keep wine stored in a cool, dark place at around 55 degrees until you are ready to pop it open.
