Here are some practical wine serving tips which every wine drinker should know. These tips will prevent you from looking like a “dummy” in front of other experienced wine drinkers. In front of non-experienced wine drinkers, you’ll look like an expert.

After you buy a bottle of wine, whether you get it from a store or it is delivered to your house, let it sit for a day or two. If the wine was just transported to the store or your house, it will taste better after a day or two of rest.

Store your wine in a dark, cool place with little to no movement. The bottles should be stored on their side if they will be stored for more than a week. If stored under a week, then standing upright is fine.

If the wine has been in storage for awhile, sediment will start to form at the bottom of the bottle. When pouring the wine, hold it up to a light to see if there is any sediment at the bottom.

Use a decanter. A decanter is a glass pitcher specially designed to let the wine get some air before consumption. Let a young wine decant for about 30-60 minutes before drinking. An older wine should be decanted so you can remove the sediment from the wine.

Choose wine glasses which are large and tulip-shaped so the aromas are funneled to your nose.

Red wines should be served at about 65 degrees F.

White wines need to be slightly chilled.

When drinking multiple kinds of wine, remember to drink white before red, dry before sweet, light before heavy, and young before old. The wines will taste much better if you stick to those guidelines.

How to Serve Champagne

If you are serving champagne at a high class event, you should remove the cork quietly. If you are serving it at a loud party on New Years Eve, let that cork fly across the room!

Wine is best served in long-stemmed glasses or tulip shaped glasses. This special shape helps enhance the bubbles and wine aromas.

Champagne is a sparkling wine but should not be served as warm as a red or white wine. It should be served a bit cooler around 42-48 degrees F.

To get this temperature, you should take a bottle of wine that isn’t chilled and put it in an ice bucket for about a half hour.

If you don’t have an ice bucket, you’ll have to put your champagne in the fridge for about 3 hours. Leaving the champagne in the fridge overnight is not a good idea because it will become too cold.

Serving champagne in the proper glass and at the proper temperature will bring out the best flavors and aromas.

When trying to pair Lasagna with wine, you need to stick with a red wine.

With lasagna and pasta, the wine is typically matched up with the sauce. With any kind of red sauces and meat sauces, which lasagna is paired with, you should stick to a hearty red.

Also, any Italian wine will work with lasagna. You can try a Zinfandel or Syrah/Shiraz if you are unfamiliar with which wines are hearty or Italian.

Wine does not contain fat! But it does contain calories which may cause you to put on some weight. Will 2 glasses a night make you fat??

Probably not…but if you do not get much exercise and have typically been the type of person who puts on weight easily, you might gain weight.

So yes, wine can cause you to pack on a little weight if you drink too much. If you keep your consumption to 1-2 glasses a day, you will most likely not gain much weight, if any at all.

Why Wine Causes Headaches

Also, the sweeter the wine, the more sulphites it contains. The higher sugar levels demand a higher level of sulphites.

So how can we prevent these headaches? First of all, you should consume wine in moderation. Men shouldn’t have more than two glasses per day and women should not have more than one per day.

Try drinking the wine with dinner or while consuming food. Drinking on an empty stomach can often lead to a bigger headache the next day.

Finally, try to stay hydrated and drink water before you go to bed and the next morning. Alcohol dehydrates the body and can be a cause of headaches and fatigue the next day.

Does Wine Go Bad After Opening

If wine is left out too long, it can go bad. There are ways to preserve wine for few days or longer after opening.

Most people can not tell if a wine was left out too long anyway, so recorking the wine and putting it in the fridge really isn’t a bad idea.

After you open a bottle of wine, it is important to put the cork back in as soon as possible; oxygen is the enemy. Oxygen causes the wine to oxidize. If the cork is returned quickly, the wine should stay good in the fridge for a few days.

According to popsci.com, “Bacteria naturally present in grapes can turn either the sugars in grape juice or the alcohol in wine into acetic acid, giving it a vinegar taste (and eventually producing a wine vinegar). However, these bacteria need oxygen to grow. Wine’s fermentation process is usually oxygen-free because of the large amount of carbon dioxide produced when yeasts turn sugars into alcohol. Uncorking the bottle introduces oxygen to feed the bacteria, and the flavor begins to change immediately. Not all changes are undesirable: Expensive red wines, in particular, are said to improve in the decanter and in the glass over a short period. Some white wines oxidize in the bottle over years, producing a rich rather than sour quality.”

If you can, it is better just to finish the bottle, but most wine can be saved for a few days.
