How to Remove Red Wine Stains from Fabric

Spilling a glass of wine can be a terrifying experience. When watching a glass of wine start to spill, it seems like it all happens in slow motion.

Since red wine is one of the worst staining liquids you could possibly spill on yourself or your carpet, you must act quickly! Letting that stain sit for a little while will make it nearly impossible to get all the way out.

Hurry up and go grab a cloth or a couple paper towels and get them slightly damp. Now, go blot the stain. No rubbing! Rubbing the stain will only make matters worse. Try and blot the stain with the cloth or paper towels in order to lift the red wine out of the fabric or carpet.

White wine is a great neutralizer of red wine. If you have some, pour a little white wine on the red wine stain.

If you don’t have any white wine nearby, grab some laundry detergent and pour a little bit directly onto the stain. Now blot it with a clean cloth.

After the stain is almost gone, I like to let it run under water while I rub a little laundry detergent directly into the stain. Now that it is almost completely gone, I would wash it in your washer. Make sure you wash it ALONE or you could ruin other clothing.

If the blotting isn’t working too well, you can try vinegar instead of laundry detergent. Vinegar is one of the best all-purpose cleaners around.

Other home remedies that are said to work well are hydrogen peroxide, salt, dish-washing liquid, and tartar sauce.

You should have at least one of the above in your kitchen! If not, you may not get that stain out. You could always try running over to a dry cleaner if you can’t get the stain out.

Red Wine Versus White Wine

Lets look at the differences in health benefits and antioxidants of red wine and white wine. While many believe red wine is better for you, the answer still remains unclear.

Here is a break down of the calories and alcohol per average glass of red and white wine.

Red Wine
(5 ounces or about 1 glass)
roughly 120 calories
180 milligrams potassium
15 grams alcohol

White Wine
(5 ounces or about 1 glass)
roughly 120 calories
101 milligrams potassium
14.6 grams alcohol

We also know that red wine contains more flavonoids, nonflavonoids, and antioxidants. Many people believe that these are the main source of health benefits that wine provides.

Beer and wine do contain some antioxidants but not nearly as much as red wine. If the theory of antioxidants being healthy is true, then red wine would be healthier than white wine. White wine would still have some benefits due to its antioxidants, although it is a much smaller amount.

But the results of many studies have been unclear. Some research has shown that antioxidants are healthy for you while other research has shown that it is not.

Aside from antioxidants, wine is good in moderation because it helps reduce bad cholesterol, increase good cholesterol, and prevent blood clots.

Key word there is MODERATION…which means no more than 2 glasses of wine a night for men and no more than 1 glass a night for women.

Wine can also reduce stress and help you relax which could add years on to your life right there.

So what’s the final verdict? Red wine may be better for you if antioxidants are as good as many people believe. If you take antioxidants out of the picture, red wine and white wine would both have the same benefits.

Can Red Wine Make You Fat?

Red wine contains calories which can cause weight gain if you consume too much. So can red wine make you fat? Yes, if you drink too much of it, you may gain weight. So how much is too much?

Well if you exceed two glasses a night, you might see some weight gain.

Also, if you do not get much exercise and have typically been the type of person who puts on weight easily, you might gain weight.

If you get some exercise and haven’t had much of a weight problem in your life, you will most likely not gain any weight.

With more and more studies showing the benefits of red wine, people are consuming more wine than ever.

Let’s remember that too much wine can be bad. Men should only have about 2 glasses a day at most and women should have no more than 1 daily. Remember, drinking moderate amounts of alcohol can increase the risk of breast cancer in women.

A glass of wine is around 100 calories. If you usually get 1800 calories a day and you add two glasses of wine a night, you will push you consumption to 2000 calories a day. This jump may be significant enough to add a few pounds to your weight.

Research has shown that drinking alcohol can increase the fat in the abdominal area, hence the term “beer belly.”

So yes, wine can cause you to pack on a little weight if you drink too much. If you keep your consumption to 1-2 glasses a day, you will most likely not gain much weight, if any at all.

When looking to pick a wine to go with steak, you have a few options. The type of wine is dependant on how you cook the steak, although there are a few common steak wines.

If you are simply serving a plain piece of steak, the most common wine would be either a Cabernet or a Bordeaux Blend.

A medium-weight wine with a lot a spice and fruity flavors, called Rioja, goes great with steak on the grill. Most people will serve this wine too cold; so make sure you serve it just below room temperature at about 60ish degrees F.

Typically, white wine or rose wines will not go good with steak no matter how you cook it.

Stick to a red wine and be adventurous when trying new spices and fruit flavored wines.
